That\u2019s according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those adults enjoyed an occasional glass of chardonnay with dinner. For others, \u201ca drink or two\u201d became\u00a0<em>more.<\/em>\u00a0Sometimes, a lot more. And that\u2019s where problems begin.<\/p>\n<h2>Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction<\/h2>\n<p>One survey found that early 32 million American adults have had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/study-finds-tens-millions-americans-drink-alcohol-dangerously-high-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">more than twice the number of drinks<\/a>\u00a0(which is considered binge drinking) on at least one occasion. Binge drinking entails at least four drinks for women at least five for men\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/study-finds-tens-millions-americans-drink-alcohol-dangerously-high-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">on one occasion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Americans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4813419\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">drink 50 percent more alcohol<\/a>\u00a0than the global average. About seven to 10 percent of North Americans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4813419\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">suffer from alcohol use disorders<\/a>\u00a0that contribute to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/study-finds-tens-millions-americans-drink-alcohol-dangerously-high-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">nearly 90,000 alcohol-related deaths<\/a>\u00a0every year.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put: Alcohol is one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcohol.org\/effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">most abused intoxicating substances<\/a>\u00a0with wide-ranging detrimental health repercussions.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not entirely sure why some people can stop with a glass whereas others finish an entire bottle, develop serious alcohol-related health problems, and become addicted to alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2770186\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">messes with your\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2770186\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">brain\u2019s reward or \u201cpleasure\u201d systems<\/a>, reinforcing those feelings so you eventually need more to get those same effects.<\/p>\n<p>Genetics also impact those factors, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/aa72\/aa72.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">how your body breaks down and eliminates alcohol<\/a>. Ultimately, any form of addiction becomes complicated and multifaceted. That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not fixable.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please note: Alcohol abuse can take numerous forms. As you will see, the drawbacks of alcohol far outweigh any benefits.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut wait!\u201d you say. You don\u2019t abuse alcohol, and you don\u2019t have a drinking problem. You\u2019re a health-conscious person who enjoys a glass of Cabernet or maybe an after-dinner cocktail because alcohol can be pleasurable.<\/p>\n<h2>The Low Down on Alcohol Metabolism<\/h2>\n<p>Besides, isn\u2019t drinking moderately healthy? The answer is\u00a0<em>maybe<\/em>, with more than a few caveats.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol\u2019s impact begins\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alcohol\/effects-on-body#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">when you take that first sip<\/a>. As a depressant, alcohol\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ucsc.edu\/alcohol-other-drugs\/alcohol\/your-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">slows down the central nervous system<\/a>, impairing things like motor coordination, reaction time, and intellectual performance.<\/p>\n<p>When you drink, getting rid of alcohol becomes your body\u2019s top priority. Everything else, including fat metabolism, takes a backseat because alcohol\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3959903\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">can be toxic<\/a>\u00a0in high enough doses. This promotes the development of fatty liver in heavy drinkers.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol metabolism involves several pathways. Two enzymes \u2014 alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/aa72\/aa72.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">contribute to these pathways<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ADH metabolizes alcohol to acetaldehyde, a toxic, carcinogenic substance.<\/li>\n<li>ALDH then breaks down acetaldehyde to acetate, which your body converts into water and carbon dioxide to easily eliminate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your body can only metabolize a certain amount of alcohol every hour\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/aa72\/aa72.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">depending on many factors<\/a>, including gender, liver size, overall nutrition, and body mass.<\/p>\n<p>Genetic variations mean you also carry different versions of ADH and ALDH enzymes, which explains why some people\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/aa72\/aa72.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">break down alcohol more efficiently than others<\/a>. Your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ucsc.edu\/alcohol-other-drugs\/alcohol\/your-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">ethnic background<\/a>\u00a0also influences your alcohol metabolism (for instance, some Asian people have difficulty metabolizing alcohol), what you eat (or\u00a0<em>if\u00a0<\/em>you eat), and your family history.<\/p>\n<p>Men and women also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ucsc.edu\/alcohol-other-drugs\/alcohol\/your-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">metabolize alcohol differently<\/a>. Women: if you wonder why those two Moscow Mules hit you harder than your male friend, you can attribute that to hormones, lower amounts of liver enzymes that break down alcohol, and less body water to dilute alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>As a general rule of thumb, your liver can process\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ucsc.edu\/alcohol-other-drugs\/alcohol\/your-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">one ounce of liquor or one standard drink per hour<\/a>. Again, that amount will vary among individuals. More than that can<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ucsc.edu\/alcohol-other-drugs\/alcohol\/your-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">\u00a0accumulate in your blood and body tissues<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 hence the term \u201chigh blood alcohol concentrations\u201d or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcohol.org\/effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">intoxication<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 until the liver can metabolize it.<\/p>\n<h2>Long-Term Effects of Drinking Too Much Alcohol<\/h2>\n<p>When someone drinks too much, they might slur their speech. Their coordination could become impaired, behavior becomes more passive or aggressive than their usual personality, and they might blurt out something inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>The long-term effects of alcohol aren\u2019t always so obvious. Your liver\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcohol.org\/effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">takes the biggest hit<\/a>eventually leading to chronic liver inflammation and liver disease that impairs its ability to detoxify.<\/p>\n<p>But drinking too much\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alcohol\/effects-on-body#4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">impacts nearly every organ<\/a>, including your digestive system, heart, pancreas, and immune system. If you decide drinking has become a problem, you might resolve to quit, but eventually relapse. Breaking free from alcohol\u2019s grip can be challenging, but there are people who can help you do it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How Alcohol Impacts Health<\/h2>\n<p>Drinking impacts nearly everything, from how clearly you think, to your relationship, to how efficiently you work. Physiologically, alcohol impacts nearly every organ.<\/p>\n<p>But again, you\u2019re a health-focused person who enjoys that occasional glass of wine. How does that play a role in a healthy diet and lifestyle? Let\u2019s look at five health factors and how alcohol impacts them.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Nutrition.\u00a0<\/strong>How alcohol impacts your overall health depends on numerous factors including how healthy your diet is, how much you drink, and how you handle alcohol. For one person, a glass of pinot noir could replace dessert after a healthy meal. For another, one glass becomes three and they subsequently nose-dive into second helpings of chocolate mousse. For some people, alcohol\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/nutritional-effects-of-alcohol-63192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">can trigger overeating<\/a>. Other people might opt for a few drinks instead of food. In other words: Know how you handle a drink or two. Long-term heavy drinking can alter your brain\u2019s chemistry, shifting your hormonal balance to impact how your body responds to stress and anxiety. A heavy drinker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/AA85\/AA85.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">might feel more anxiety<\/a>\u00a0confronted with a stressful situation, for instance, than a non-drinker or moderate drinker.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hormonal balance.\u00a0<\/strong>Alcohol\u2019s impact on hormones is complex, interrelated, dose-dependent, and varies among individuals. Take estrogen as one example: Chronic alcohol intake\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4813419\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">increases this hormone in men and women<\/a>. \u201cAlcohol increases your estrogen, which is why men with beer bellies grow breasts and lose their body hair,\u201d says Mark Hyman, MD, in\u00a0<em>Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?.<\/em>\u00a0For women, drinking alcohol can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9480365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">increase risk for breast cancer<\/a>. Estrogen imbalances can also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4813419\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">raise your stress hormone, cortisol<\/a>. Alcohol can likewise\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12711931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">decrease testosterone levels<\/a>, although this impact seems to be dose-dependent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exercise.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c[T]he association between alcohol and sports in the U.S. has also been attributed, at least in part, to the idea that working hard, especially physically intensive effort,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4629692\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">goes hand in hand with drinking<\/a>,\u201d researchers note. \u201cThe implicit notion is that working hard, especially physically, earns the right to consume alcohol or engage in other indulging activities.\u201d Among its detrimental consequences, alcohol can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drinkaware.co.uk\/alcohol-facts\/health-effects-of-alcohol\/lifestyle\/can-alcohol-affect-sports-performance-and-fitness-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">increase dehydration, impair your liver\u2019s ability to produce glucose as energy during a workout<\/a>, trigger blood sugar imbalances that leave you feeling lethargic and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wellness.ucsd.edu\/studenthealth\/resources\/health-topics\/alcohol-drugs\/Pages\/alcohol-nutrition-endurance.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">impair muscle recovery<\/a>. Alcohol can also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcohol.org\/effects\/before-after-lifting-weights-cardio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">impact balance and coordination<\/a>\u00a0when you\u2019re, say, lifting heavy. Plus, let\u2019s be honest, exercising with a hangover feels absolutely miserable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Everyone handles alcohol differently. If you drink, consider how alcohol impacts you. Are you more likely to reach for dessert, say something you\u2019ll later regret, blow off a workout, or struggle with a good night\u2019s sleep after a few glasses of wine?<\/p>\n<h3>Can You Be Healthy and Still Drink Alcohol?<\/h3>\n<p>Although inconsistent and inconclusive, some earlier studies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22391060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">attributed moderate drinking to better health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One meta-analysis of 34 studies defined moderate drinking as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17159008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">a few drinks a day<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 one or two for women and two to four for men. As a whole, moderate drinkers in that review lived a bit longer than those who didn\u2019t drink.<\/p>\n<p>But newer research suggests otherwise. The recent Global Burden of Diseases study, which looked at the health effects of alcohol among 195 countries from 1990 to 2016, concluded that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">only amount of alcohol that was healthy was\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">none<\/a><\/em><em>.\u00a0<\/em>(Don\u2019t shoot the messenger.)<\/p>\n<p>So why did alcohol ever get a spotlight in health? You can attribute many of those purported benefits to red wine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed wine has gotten a ton of press for its health-promoting abilities and has even been credited for something called the \u2018French Paradox,\u2019\u201d says Bowden in\u00a0<em>The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cThe truth\u2014as always\u2014is a bit more complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The French Paradox, if you haven\u2019t heard the term, was coined in the 1980s to describe how even though the French indulge in indulgences like cheese and red wine (sometimes\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1768013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">lots\u00a0<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1768013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">of red wine<\/a>), they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1768013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">have less heart disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The big sell for red wine\u2019s health benefits comes from resveratrol, a polyphenol in grapes, blueberries, peanuts, a few other plant foods, and yes, red wine.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers praise this compound\u2019s benefits for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4942868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">heart, brain, metabolic, and age-related diseases<\/a>. As a nutrient, resveratrol earns praise for its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4942868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most clinical trials of resveratrol focus on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5630227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">cancer, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and obesity<\/a>. Most (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5630227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">but not all<\/a>) studies showed benefits but in\u00a0<em>therapeutic doses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4942868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">won\u2019t get these therapeutic benefits of resveratrol<\/a>\u00a0from drinking red wine. According to Hyman, rats had \u201cto consume an amount equivalent to what would be in 1,500 bottles of red wine to reap the benefits\u201d of resveratrol. (Please don\u2019t try this at home!)<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Start or Drink Smart<\/h3>\n<p>Red wine doesn\u2019t earn the limelight some people believe, and drinking alcohol seems all-around bad news for your overall health. But if you\u2019re going out with friends tonight, and you know you will raise a toast with a drink or two, you want to stay healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way: You\u2019re going to occasionally drink alcohol, and no study will convince you otherwise. How can you do it intelligently?<\/p>\n<p>Your worst options include sugary alcoholic drinks like Cosmopolitans, which deliver a double whammy to your liver with alcohol and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29408694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">fructose<\/a>\u00a0(the most damaging sugar).<\/p>\n<p>Other options such as beer contain food sensitivities, including gluten (unless you choose a gluten-free beer). While most straight liquors aren\u2019t sweetened, mixing them with tonic water, diet soda, or other mixers add a big dose of sugar or artificial sweetener. (If you choose mixed drinks, use mineral water.)<\/p>\n<p>Based on overall evidence, a glass of red wine becomes your best alcohol option. A five-ounce glass only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/red-vs-white-wine#section3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">contains about a gram of sugar<\/a>\u00a0along with a few nutrients. White wine is low in sugar too but contains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/red-vs-white-wine#section3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">fewer healthy plant compounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Worth repeating: Even though pinot noir, cabernet, and other red varieties contain\u00a0<em>some\u00a0<\/em>health-promoting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Resveratrol-in-Wines-and-Grapes.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">resveratrol<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/red-vs-white-wine#section3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">a tiny amount of some nutrients<\/a>, the drawbacks of drinking even red wine heavily outweigh any health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>If you do drink, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ucsc.edu\/alcohol-other-drugs\/alcohol\/your-body.html#one_drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">know your pour<\/a>.\u201d Restaurants can be liberal mixing liquor in cocktails, and you can easily fit half a bottle or more of red wine into one generously sized glass. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Oversized-Extra-Large-Giant-Glass\/dp\/B00HS586RE?keywords=wine+whole+bottle+glass&amp;qid=1547500990&amp;sr=8-1-spons&amp;ref=sr_1_1_sspa&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Case in point.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>For the record, one serving of alcohol is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 12-ounce beer with about four percent alcohol. (Some beers have a higher alcohol content.)<\/li>\n<li>5 ounces of 80-proof (40 percent alcohol) of whiskey, gin or other liquor.<\/li>\n<li>A five-ounce glass of wine (white, red, ros\u00e9, champagne).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And\u00a0<em>stay hydrated\u00a0<\/em>when you drink. Have at least two glasses of filtered water for every alcoholic beverage.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the science behind moderately drinking alcohol and staying healthy is complicated, contradictory, and inconclusive. Newer studies have some experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">rethinking whether\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">any<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">amount of alcohol can be healthy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This evidence still won\u2019t stop some people from drinking. If you feel like drinking moderately fits into your diet, know how you handle alcohol, choose the right type, and remember that\u00a0<em>moderate\u00a0<\/em>amounts might be less than you think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A]lcohol is a double-edged sword: As the number of drinks you consume surpasses one or two daily, so, too, does your risk of mortality,\u201d says Hyman. \u201cPeople who drink the most have shorter life expectancies than those who abstain.
