For such little glands, they sure do a lot of work: Your adrenals are\u00a0two small but mighty glands<\/a>that sit atop your kidneys,<\/p>\n Though tiny \u2014 about\u00a01.5 inches in height and three inches in length<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 your adrenal glands play\u00a0many roles<\/a>\u00a0including managing energy levels, immune health, blood pressure, and how you manage stress.<\/p>\n Those glands are\u00a0divided into two parts<\/a>, each performing different functions by secreting specific hormones or chemical messengers:<\/p>\n Your adrenals play many important roles and secrete numerous hormones. Under- or over-secreting these hormones can have a dramatic impact on your body.<\/p>\n Too much aldosterone, for instance, can raise blood pressure. Left unchecked, high blood pressure can\u00a0increase your risk for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or kidney failure<\/a>.<\/p>\n While multiple situations can disrupt adrenal function, one big driver in our fast-faster modern-day society is\u00a0stress.<\/em><\/p>\n Let\u2019s say you feel a threat, either real or perceived. Your brain \u2014 more specifically, your hypothalamus \u2014 sends a high-alert signal. Your adrenal glands rush into action,\u00a0secreting hormones including adrenaline and cortisol<\/a>.<\/p>\n Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure, and energy levels. Cortisol increases glucose, especially to fuel your brain. Everything else \u2014 digestion, immune health,\u00a0anything\u00a0<\/em>non-essential for immediate survival \u2014\u00a0goes on the backburner<\/a>.<\/p>\n Stress mobilizes your adrenals to release\u00a0short bursts of cortisol into the bloodstream<\/a>\u00a0to handle a potentially dangerous situation.<\/p>\n Sometimes called\u00a0nature\u2019s built-in alarm system<\/a>, cortisol works with certain parts of your brain to\u00a0control mood, motivation, and fear<\/a>.<\/p>\n While it sometimes earns a bad reputation, cortisol isn\u2019t bad\u00a0in the short term<\/em>. This hormone regulates\u00a0how the body converts food into energy<\/a>, blood pressure, and how your heart functions.<\/p>\n Once that threat passes, your adrenals stop secreting these hormones, your heart rate and blood pressure normalizes, and every bodily system\u00a0resumes its normal activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n At least, that\u2019s how it\u00a0should\u00a0<\/em>work.<\/p>\n When you feel near-constant stress \u2014 real or perceived \u2014 that fight-or-flight reaction stays turned on. Your adrenals continue releasing hormones. And hormones that shouldn\u2019t constantly be secreted \u2014 in this case, cortisol \u2014 stay cranked up and exhaust your already-overworked adrenal glands.<\/p>\n Simply put: Chronic stress makes your adrenals work harder.<\/p>\n Stress comes from many sources including\u00a0workplace-related stressors<\/a>. Gender inequality can also create or exacerbate stress. Women can feel a greater pressure to maintain work-family balance.<\/p>\n But chronic stress impacts\u00a0everyone<\/em>, and your adrenals take the hit. While many sources might seem obvious \u2014 a demanding boss or rebellious teenager can certainly create stress \u2014 others aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n People manage stress differently. Some people lose weight, while others gain. One culprit for that weight gain: Sugary, fatty comfort foods. Reaching for those foods regularly when you feel stress\u2019s impact makes a\u00a0perfect combination for obesity<\/a>.<\/p>\n Consider a typical highly processed, grab-and-go diet. Today the average American consumes a whopping\u00a0152 pounds of sugar yearly<\/a>. This only accounts for sugary foods. But all carbohydrates \u2014 including those from pasta, bread, and whole wheat crackers \u2014 break down into sugar.<\/p>\n These sugary, processed foods\u00a0increase insulin levels,<\/a>\u00a0which help manage that increase in blood sugar. Insulin pulls your blood sugar down. An hour or two after you ate that sugary food, your adrenals secrete cortisol to stabilize blood sugar.<\/p>\n This happens repeatedly as you eat sugary foods throughout the day. According to Vincent Pedre, MD, in\u00a0Happy Gut,\u00a0<\/em>those increased levels of cortisol put added stress on your adrenals.<\/p>\n Chronic stress can also make your body lose its ability to regulate the inflammatory response, promote the\u00a0development and progression of disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n Pair that with an inflammatory diet \u2014 along with too much sugar, we\u2019re eating about\u00a020 times more inflammatory fats<\/a>\u00a0compared with anti-inflammatory fats \u2014 and you\u2019ve got a surefire formula for adrenal dysfunction.<\/p>\n Healthy adrenal glands perform synergistically. They secrete the right amount of hormones to, for example, balance your blood pressure or protect you from harm. But these glands should do that job \u2014 secrete the correct amount of a hormone your body needs \u2014 and then return to normal.<\/p>\n When they don\u2019t \u2014 when they, say, over-secrete cortisol \u2014 almost everything suffers.<\/p>\n From a medical perspective, adrenal imbalances can lead to Cushing\u2019s syndrome (too much cortisol<\/a>) or Addison\u2019s disease (too little cortisol<\/a>). Each carries its own symptoms.<\/p>\n But within those two extremes lies other dysfunctions. Adrenal fatigue, first coined by James Wilson, Ph.D., encompasses a group of related signs and symptoms (collectively called a syndrome) where\u00a0your adrenal glands underperform<\/a>\u00a0and sufficient rest doesn\u2019t\u00a0doesn\u2019t resolve symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n According to this theory, your overworked adrenal glands \u2014 brought on by too much stress \u2014\u00a0become fatigued<\/a>\u00a0and can\u2019t keep up with your body\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n Adrenal burnout or\u00a0fatigue<\/em>\u00a0can manifest in\u00a0many signs and symptoms, including<\/a>:<\/p>\n Some organizations, including The Endocrine Society, argue that adrenal fatigue\u00a0is not a real disease<\/a>. Its symptoms, they claim, can apply to many diseases or conditions including depression or simply the demands of everyday life.<\/p>\n What experts\u00a0do\u00a0<\/em>agree on: A\u00a0number of disorders impact your adrenal glands<\/a>. Adrenal\u00a0insufficiency<\/em>, for instance, occurs when your adrenal glands\u00a0can\u2019t make enough hormones, especially cortisol<\/a>.<\/p>\n Chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, weight loss, and gut-related problems\u00a0are among the symptoms<\/a>\u00a0of adrenal insufficiency.<\/p>\n Addison\u2019s disease falls under the\u00a0adrenal insufficiency\u00a0<\/em>umbrella, where your adrenals don\u2019t make enough hormones. More specifically, we call Addison\u2019s disease\u00a0primary<\/em>\u00a0adrenal insufficiency.<\/p>\n While Addison\u2019s disease is rare,\u00a0secondary\u00a0<\/a><\/em>adrenal insufficiency<\/a>\u00a0is more common.<\/p>\n Adrenal dysfunction often requires working closely with a healthcare practitioner to determine underlying causes and address specific conditions. A blood test can determine whether your cortisol levels are too low.<\/p>\n At the same time, you have plenty of power to support adrenal health.<\/p>\n Stress plays a part in\u00a0many health-related problems<\/a>, including headaches, heart disease, immune problems, and digestive issues. One primary contributor to stress-induced problems: An\u00a0increased production of stress hormones,<\/a>\u00a0which can<\/a>\u00a0impact immune health<\/a>, your adrenals, and other problems. .<\/p>\n Conversely, the right nourishment (including stress management) can help your adrenals perform optimally.
