Keeping Your Body Strong to Fight Against Illness

As we continue to navigate the ever-changing environment around us, you may be wondering, “How can I best protect myself and my family from illness and infection?”

Momentum is here to help with a few strategies for supporting your immune system and keeping your body healthy and strong in this season:

We are what we eat.

Did you know over 70% of our immune system is housed in the gut? If our kitchens are full of junk food, sugary treats, and packages filled with preservatives, we are not giving ourselves the opportunity to make nutritious choices. Supporting your immune system requires maintaining a healthy diet low in refined sugars and rich in nutrient-dense, whole foods – like lean meats, healthy fats and lots of colorful fruits and vegetables that provide numerous immune-supporting nutrients.

Stay moving, stay healthy.

When you exercise, you signal your immune system to kick into action.

The right type of training can help your immune system fight bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other invaders that can make you sick. The key to getting those immune-boosting benefits is to train correctly with moderate amounts of exercise – Don’t overdo it! Some great options include: aerobic exercise (swimming, walking, biking), high intensity interval training (HIIT), strength training, and flexibility exercises (yoga and stretching).

Keep stress at bay with sufficient sleep

Stress and sleep feed off of each other. Not sleeping well can raise inflammation and lower your immune system. Getting proper sleep every night (around 7-9 hours) and allowing your body to heal is one of the most important aspects to building a strong immune system. Try creating a sleep ritual where you shut off electronics an hour or two before bed, take a hot bath, or journal or read to unwind.

Make time for moments of mindfulness

Find a few moments every day for gratitude: for your family, friends, job, your health, and any other blessing you feel. Research shows expressing gratitude can improve mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety – which can in turn improve immunity. Pausing to reflect on the good in your life can set a positive tone for your day, especially in these trying times.

Using these helpful and healthy tools will not only keep your immune system strong – but will also help in eliminating fear and anxiety. You can rest easy knowing you’re doing all that you can to keep yourself and your family healthy.

There is nothing more important than your health and the health of your loved ones – now more than ever. If you are interested in learning more about boosting your immune system and keeping your body strong and healthy, contact Momentum today to speak to our expert staff!
